THE PEDIATRIC SEXUAL ASSAULT FORENSIC NURSE EXAMINER TRAINING PROGRAM

The American Institute of Forensic Education presents a comprehensive, online 85-hour Pediatric Sexual Assault Forensic Nurse Examiner (SAE) training program. This program is designed to prepare registered nurses and other qualified health care professionals to conduct the pediatric forensic examination of male and female child sexual assault victims. The course content includes background information and demographics of pediatric sexual assault,  introduction to pertinent anatomy and physiology, forensic terminology for documentation, photographic documentation including use of colposcope, imaging, collection, handling and preservation of physical evidence and biological specimens, evidentiary chain of custody procedures, assessment and management of injuries, prophylaxis for health risks, medical and forensic documentation procedures, and preparation for the examiner’s role in judicial processes, including courtroom testimony.

The course instructor is available throughout the term of the course and will assist in linking participants to professional resources within their own communities for additional learning.

Upon successful completion of the 40-hour online course and the 45-hour supervised clinical and non-clinical internship, the licensed healthcare professional will receive a Certificate of Completion. For registered nurses awarded this certificate, prerequisites for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Certification-Pediatric written examination is satisfied.  This course provides 85 California BRN Continuing Education Hours for registered nurses.  Participants residing outside of California should contact their individual state's licensing board to verify and determine the California BRN applicability.

OBJECTIVES

  • State the essential procedural steps of the pediatric sexual assault examination. Identify three major factors that distinguish the pediatric examination differing from that of an adult.

  • Describe recommended techniques for interviewing children who represent various developmental, cognitive and communication stages.

  • Compare and contrast essential procedural steps in the sexual assault.

  • Examination of male and female pediatric subjects with considerations for state and jurisdictional variations.

  • Identify techniques for collaboration with child services and law enforcement personnel in the assessment and post-event management of the child victim of sexual assault.

  • Observe a sexual assault forensic examination on a child victim, male or female, using recognized forensic evidence collection techniques with emphasis on the detailed description of genital findings.

  • Assist with the precise and objective documentation of forensic evidence that is consistent with jurisdictional format which satisfies the standards of admissibility for sexual assault evidence in a court of law.

  • Differentiate between findings that may be related by causation to a sexual assault and those resulting from normal variants and other mechanisms.

  • List authoritative resources available to the sexual assault examiner for evidence-based practice and continuing education in forensic nursing practice.
