in partnership with the University of California presents online The Sexual Assault Examination:
Adult/Adolescent Female and Male, a comprehensive sexual assault examiner
training program (SAE, SANE, FNE, SAFE) designed to prepare registered nurses
and other qualified health care professionals to perform forensic evaluations
of sexual assault victims. Content includes medical assessment and treatment of
injuries, collection and preservation of physical evidence and biological
specimens, appropriate anatomy and physiology, forensic terminology, DNA,
forensic wound identification, use of toluidine blue
dye and Wood's lamp, photography, chain of custody, victim follow-up care,
perpetrator forensic examination and profiling, law enforcement investigation,
advocate crisis intervention, documentation procedures and preparation for
court testimony. Upon completion of the academic portion of the course, the
participant must engage in a clinical and non-clinical internship program. This
additional 45-hour internship includes participation in speculum and sexual
assault forensic examinations, law enforcement ride-a-long, observation of
trial court proceedings, advocacy program observation and observation of the
administrative procedures of the prosecutorial agency (District Attorney). Upon
successful completion of the academic and internship portions of the training
program a Certificate of Completion will be issued and the participant may
begin practicing as a sexual assault examiner.

interested in becoming Pediatric Forensic Examiners. The course content
includes background information and demographics of pediatric sexual assault,
introduction to pertinent anatomy and physiology, forensic terminology for
documentation, photographic documentation including use of colposcope,
imaging, collection, handling and preservation of physical evidence and
biological specimens, evidentiary chain of custody procedures, assessment and
management of injuries and prophylaxis for health risks, medical and forensic
documentation procedures, and preparation for the examiner's role in judicial
processes including depositions and courtroom testimony. Upon successful
completion of the 40-hour didactic and the 45-hour supervised clinical and
non-clinical internship, the licensed healthcare professional will receive a
Certificate of Completion. This course provides California BRN 85-hours of
Continuing Education for registered nurses. Participants residing outside of California will need to
contact their individual state's licensing board to verify and determine the
California BRN applicability.
